City Pups
5 Day Design Sprint
Context
City Pups is a desktop adoption website that specializes in showing dogs that are open for adoption. As an aggregator, the dogs are compiled from shelters and pounds from the searched area.
Scope & Constraints
This is a modified version of the Google Venture (GV) Design Sprint that generally lasts 5 days with a team. I used a scenario from Bitesize UX that included preliminary research about the problem space to complete tasks for each day.
Users
Adults over 20
Have adopted a dog before
Interested in adopting in the future
Willing to invest time to research before adopting
Problem
Potential dog adopters have a challenging time finding a dog that meets all of their criteria when most adoption sites don’t have detailed profiles or a variety of specifications and filters to use to narrow down searches.
Solution
Based on research and user flow, the solution is a dog adoption website with lots of filters for users to narrow down their search for their dream dog.

Day 1 | Map
End-to-End User Experience Map
I created a user experience map of a user searching for an adoption match to inspire a more effective solution during sketching and storyboarding.
Day 2 | Sketch
Competitive Analysis
I researched 6 companies to find out:
How they approach the dog adoption process
What core filters they use
What made their search criteria unique.

Crazy 8’s Revealed
I discovered that the most critical screen is the first results page following the basic search because the biggest challenge for users looking to adopt is not having enough information.
Solution Sketch
In our solution sketch, our user:
Starts on the landing page
Inputs their first search criteria
Clicks search
Views a results page with dogs matching their first search
Clicks through additional filters
Views dog profiles
Chooses a dog to adopt
Day 3 | Storyboard
Storyboard
To begin the prototyping process, I created a storyboard of 14 screens focusing on:

Search filters
Dog profiles
Day 4 | Prototype
Prototype
This prototype displays a dog adoption website focused on helping users feel like they know enough about the dog to be comfortable adopting by narrowing down their search with filters and having detailed dog profiles.

Day 5 | Validate
Moderated Usability Testing
During testing we needed to validate:
If the words used made sense
Which categories and filters are important to users
What else users need to know in order to adopt
Each user had specific categories and criteria that they focused on based on a past experience which led to our more important findings of:
Creating more filters within categories
Adding more information to the dog profiles
Last Iteration
(Before) Pups Profile
Users wanted to see more information on dog profiles
(After) Pups Profile
Added more information under Bio:
Past
Health History
Breed Information
Common Health Conditions Associated with Breed
Keeping user feedback in mind, I created more filters within categories which you can see below.
Impact
In order for City Pups to meet user demands, it was crucial to improve the filtering system and provide more information in each dog profile.
After all, knowing as much as possible about each dog only helps the adopter and their new best friend!
Next Steps
I’d like to test the iterated prototype with new users to reveal any other areas that need improvement. I gained plenty of insight from the usability testing so getting more opinions on the design will improve the design by accommodating the criteria new users feel is lacking.
